Frankfurt Airport - Terminal 3

Specialist planning of the technical equipment for the new-build terminal in a major international airport
The first expansion phase for the new Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport is scheduled to go into operation in 2023 and provide additional capacities for 14 million passengers a year. The final expansion stage will cater to 19 million travellers p.a. By that time, the terminal’s total area will be 306,000 m2, spread across five upper floors and two basement floors. Wide-body aircraft from all over the world will dock at 24 gates. CANZLER is in charge of the HVAC and sanitary technology planning for the major project and supports the operator Fraport in the tendering, too. Our planning focuses on maximum flexible uses when the terminal is in operation. The variety of uses spells a raft of technical requirements. Thus, for example, retail spaces need more cooling and passenger zones have to offer pleasant climatic conditions despite fluctuating passenger volumes and irrespective of the outdoor weather. Moreover, the developer wants to have an energy-efficient and sustainable property. Thus, waste heat from the baggage conveyor belts is used to heat the terminal.

Airports are complex and high-tech special-purpose buildings that require a special planning methodology. CANZLER is today already planning the technical equipment at the same time as the other planners are at work and in real-time in a virtual data room using Building Information Modeling (BIM).
