Skylight - Noise Emission Reduction

Tasks and Solutions

Ensuring compliance with legally-prescribed emission limits for an extensive refrigeration system at night in a city-center residential area

Kind of Object and Use

Bank high-rise with a computer center located in the city center, 53,000 m²

The Skylight building complex is located in the center of Frankfurt am Main, encompassing an area of 53,000 m².

The primary tenant, a globally-active banking corporation, operates a large computer center inside the building that must be powered without interruption 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

On the roof of the high-rise there are ventilation and recooling units which disturb the neighboring apartment tower by their high noise level, particularly at night.

The allowable noise emission value for residential areas between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. is 45 dB(A), with emission values of 61.3 dB(A) measured at the site.

Canzler developed and implemented a multi-stage action plan:

  • Implementation of provisional measures for short-term partial reduction of noise emissions
  • Review and adjustment of operating times for all equipment
  • Conversion of control systems for various devices for long-term reduction of emissions to comply with legal limits
  • Assistance with providing proof and documentation to authorities and complainants
